'They have my vote!' Generous county councillors show support for Beeston FC

Local politicians from across the parties make generous donations to club during tough season

County councillors have been praised for their generous support of Beeston FC after helping the club meet the costs of youth kit this season.

The club, which is based in Beeston Rylands and supports more than 200 children and young people to play football, has had a tough season or two when finances have been stretched with increasing costs and falling income.

However, big-hearted councillors from all parties stepped in when they were needed most to help the club meet the youngsters’ kit costs.

Beeston FC draws players from all over the town, Stapleford and Toton and four Nottinghamshire County councillors, across three divisions, dipped into their divisional funds to help meet a £6,000 kit bill.

Conservative councillors Eric Kerry and Richard Jackson, who represent Toton, Chilwell and Attenborough, donated £1,000 and £500, respectively.

Labour councillor Kate Foale, who represents Beeston Central and Rylands, contributed £500 and Liberal Democrat, Councillor Stephen Carr put in £650.

Between them the councillors supported three girls’ teams and four boys’ teams.

Beeston FC club chairman Steve Hyde said: 'Financially, it has been a really tough 18 months for the club. Energy prices rocketed, ground maintenance and kit went up and we lost a long term let at our clubhouse. But everyone has rallied round and while there is still a lot to do, we are getting there.

'Beeston councillors have been brilliant. Kit is one of our biggest and most important expenses. When we were struggling this season our local representatives - from all parties - stepped in with some much-needed support. We are very grateful.'

The councillors helped fund kit for the U11, U13 and U14 girls, as well as U10, U12, U14 and U15 boys, plus bibs and balls.

U11 Girls' manager, Simon Betts, said: “It’s important for young players to look smart on the pitch and all be wearing the right kit. It means a lot to them. And teens grow at a phenomenal rate, so we have to keep up with the sizes!

“Our team received a new match kit and it looks great. We really appreciate the councillors lending a financial hand when we needed it most. It has made a big difference in the community. Thank you."

As well as support from councillors, the club has opened the café and bar at the Trent Vale ground, had some fundraising events, obtained some sponsorship and has some football tournaments and a major fundraiser planned.

“This was unbelievable support from our local politicians and it has made a massive difference,’ said Charles Walker, Beeston FC volunteer. “We are so grateful for their contributions.

“We turned to our local councillors and they came through for us at a difficult moment. Thank you so much. They certainly have my vote!”
